Twitter Trend Weekly: Golf Makes Some People Smile

Often, they're annoying and spammy, but at their best Twitter hashtags... and the trending topics they spawn... can offer us an enlightening view of the way things are perceived by the masses.

Over the years I've enjoyed observing the 140 character thoughts and opinions expressed about golf... and I've often been entertained by them.  Frequently funny and sometimes surprising, tweets, when looked at collectively, can certainly tell a story.

That's the idea behind Twitter Trend Weekly, a new feature I'll be presenting here each Wednesday.  I'm thinking it might be a fun way to liven up the middle of the week and a good chance to see what folks are saying about the the sport we love.

This week's topic is #howtomakemesmile

The course alone seems to make some girls happy...

...while others want to make sure they get the full experience.

Guys, apparently, like to have an audience...

...even if it's just an audience of one admiring female.

It's the golf swag that does it for some...

...while others apparently just want to see their rivals under the wheels of a golf buggy.

Alrighty then.  "Twitter Trend Weekly" will be back again next Wednesday with more hashtag-inspired observations in 140 characters or less.

Another Reason to Take Up Golf: Both Sexes Find Golfers Attractive

As any golf evangelist will tell you, there are myriad reasons to take up the sport: the social aspect, the outdoors-in-nature aspect and the fact that golf is a game one can play for a lifetime, are three that come up frequently. And there are tons of others - a google search brings up more lists of "reasons to play golf" than you can swing a seven iron at.

However, there's one incentive that didn't appear on any of the lists I looked at, and I'm guessing it's one that might be particularly attractive to that prized 18-25 year-old demographic: new evidence has emerged that indicates both males and females find golfers "attractive".

Okay, it's probably not something the scientific community would agree on... these findings are actually rather anecdotal in nature... in fact, they're based on a Twitter hashtag.

Golf Demographic Suddenly Skews Younger - On Course With 1D

Let's face it, golf, more than any other sport... except maybe shuffleboard... is perceived as an old person's game.

Despite recent industry efforts to change that view, the "old golfer" image is clearly alive and well in the minds of many. At least that's the impression I came away with after a quick perusal of Twitter recently.

Some were quite matter-of-fact about it...

...while others were more emphatically dismissive.

I encountered one young lady who seemed to thoroughly enjoy interacting with her on-course elders...

... and another who definitely didn't.

The general consensus however seemed to be: golfer = old (and generally uninteresting, often unpleasant, always uncool).  However, that may be about to change.
